http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/entertai...00/10003188.stm

Gerard Butler has admitted that constant press reports painting him as a womaniser aren't always good for his reputation.

The Scottish actor, who has been linked in the tabloids with a string of women including Jennifer Aniston and Lindsay Lohan, says the speculation isn't necessarily a good thing.

He told Newsbeat: "I think it does do your reputation harm if this is happening every week.

"It gets to the stage when you want to go, 'Don't come near because then we'll be having a thing! Stay over there and we maybe can shout to each other'."

He admits he discussed the issue with Jennifer Aniston when they met filming upcoming movie The Bounty in New York over the summer.

He said: "I remember I had the conversation with Jennifer because she gets the same thing but in a different way."

The tabloids frequently speculated that the pair were romantically involved during the shoot and Gerard says the imagination of some reporters was "actually quite commendable".

"We spent every second of the movie pretty much together so what happens is you're on set together, we're pretty much in the same car the whole movie," he added.

"Every day the press would come, they'd take the same shots and the headlines would be, 'They're still in the car together' - yes, because we're filming!"

He recalled one incident on set when the on-screen drama even appeared in the papers as a story.

"It was very funny, at one time we were doing a scene where she takes a call. She was being spied from another rooftop and they said, 'She obviously stopped filming to take a call from her lover Gerard Butler'."

The 40-year-old recently celebrated his birthday at the Glasgow premiere of his new movie Law Abiding Citizen with 120 friends and family.

He admits that it would be nice to meet someone special, although it's not his top priority at the moment.

He said: "It would be good to settle down eventually.

"It's not like I'm sitting there with laser vision going, 'OK, are you the one?' because what I'm doing is great as well.

"I've been in relationships and that's been great but that has its own problems when you're travelling as much as I do.

He went on to and also said: "I've not been [in a relationship] and that's been great but that has its own problems."

Gerard's busy promoting Law Abiding Citizen, which also stars Jamie Foxx, and centres on a man who decides to take justice into his own hands after one of his family's killers is set free.

He admits that even though the thriller's been toned down a bit it's still quite graphic.

He said: "It's pretty violent, there's no doubt about it, but if it's too much for you you just put your hands over your eyes - which I've seen a few times."

"Maybe only 1% of people have said it's too violent. The very reason people say it's violent is the reason that people loved it so much because it doesn't shy away from that."

This week he returns in action movie Law Abiding Citizen, which sees him team up with Oscar winner Jamie Foxx.

A frustrated man decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family's killers free. He targets not only the killer but also the district attorney and others involved in the deal.

Alcohol - Gerard is teetotal. Back in his youth he used to drink heavily and this was one of the factors that contributed to his firing from his law firm.
Bond - Butler had a small appearance in Tomorrow Never Dies, however his performance was cut out of the final film.
Charities - Gerard gives back through his charitable work and in particular his work with Kids Kicking Cancer.
Date - Gerard is never short of a date in Hollywood, however he chose to bring his mother as his date to the Glasgow premiere of his new film, Law Abiding Citizen.

Injury - Gerard pushed his body to the limit for his role in 300, injuring his forearm and developed tendinitis in almost every part of his body.
Jennifer Aniston - Gerard has been romantically linked to his co-star.
Kilt - Gerard is proud of his Scottish heritage and chose to wear a kilt to the Scottish premiere of Law Abiding Citizen.
Law Abiding Citizen - Gerard’s new film, which he both produced and starred in alongside Jamie Foxx.
Marriage - Contrary to public opinion, Gerard has never been married or engaged, and it doesn’t look like he is going to give up his bachelor status anytime soon.

Oliver - Gerard’s first stage performance as a street urchin!
Phantom of the Opera - Gerard starred opposite Emmy Rossum in the screen version of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s acclaimed musical.

Wine Steward - the Norman meaning of Gerard’s surname, Butler!
X-rated Body!

Poveraccio, ormai sta diventando davvero paranoico... però un pochino è anche colpa sua se questa storia è iniziata visto che gli piace flirtare, anche solo per schezo, un po' con tutte.

CITAZIONE
The Infamous Gerard Butler...
G. K. Sanghar
November 30, 2009

With his star on the rise at the crisp age of 'twenty-one' (40 to be honest), Hollywood superstar Gerard Butler seems to have bagged a triumphant movie career, fame, a sizeable bank account and a long string of adoring and over-zealous supporters from across the globe.

But is this Scotsman all talk and no trousers? :D

The sheer mention of "The Gerard Butler" sends both men and women into hysterics. Every time his name arises, the replies are surprisingly repetitive and over the top: "Oh My God! That actor from 300," "He is so hot!" and not forgetting the classic-old "I want to marry him and have babies with him." (giggles…)

I may not have watched 300 but I can declare that this power-packed talent house has certainly progressed way past his teeny loincloth and a six-pack which no doubt catapulted him to superstardom and into becoming one of the (if not, the only) reigning Scottish actors in international film history! But as beautifully painted his current life canvas may appear, reaching for the stars may have been nothing more than a far-fetched dream for a boy from quaint Paisley, Scotland.

Starting life in Glasgow as a bright young chap, Butler was tipped on becoming an actor from the very beginning. Maybe it was the idyllic pastures and highlands of Scotland that sent him into a land of escapism, permitting make-believe all the more possible or perhaps the act of pretending to be ´someone else´ (through acting) liberated him from his insecurities. Whatever the case, Butler always believed he was destined for bigger things in life even though many were unimpressed with his acting aspirations. "You were seen as weird if you wanted to be an actor but I didn´t mind. It was just what I wanted to do", he once said. Ideally, he ventured into law as a student but the stars had chosen otherwise. He was fired as a lawyer and the very next day, he packed his baggage and moved to London to become an actor. As easy as this may sound, it must have taken a surge of strength and confidence to pull off the ambitious attempt.

Leaving a pile of broken hearts behind, especially his mum´s – many fail to understand what it must have felt like to be in Butler´s shoes at that dark point of time. "I had no connections, no experience, no training and no prospects. Everyone was laughing at me. They were all thinking I´d messed up my whole career", as stated in the Men´s Health magazine. But the valiant Scorpio was determined to outlive and outdo in times of adversity. Endless passionate strides, lots of hard work, dedication, a bit of the devil´s luck and a manager-comrade by the name of Alan Siegel, got him to where he stands today…up on gigantic billboards and in the hearts of most media professionals and devotees.

However, the one thing that frustrates me most is that it is beyond understanding how one manages to stay quite so normal despite the overwhelming success. Butler gave up the booze a long time back so do not expect any drunken sailor mischief; he hardly lands himself in the hot soup and never fails to flash a smile wherever he goes. From Scotland to Singapore, I have not met a single die-hard fan who has not sung his praises! Maybe it is his jovial and generous nature that comes across in most of his interviews or his composed exterior whenever in the company of the paparazzi or the decent effort he makes to stay in close contact with his fans that makes him a much-loved celebrity on websites like Gerard Butler Net and GB Gals. In fact, these websites are run by thousands of well-wishers around the world whose lives revolve around the actor every single day. From what I know, they should be awarded for their unwavering support and commitment towards ensuring his popularity. From movie premieres to conventions, fan greeting sessions, seasonal greetings or birthday wishes – the love they shower onto him alongside his choice of profession are highly commendable.

This was palpable to see at the promotion of his first film production Law Abiding Citizen in his hometown where Butler undoubtedly could not seem to suppress his appreciation at the sight of his fans and the glory he brought upon himself for having done his nation proud. Both fans and citizens were delighted to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-producer inclined with his roots in his traditional Scottish attire with his proud mother in-hand on the red carpet. Clearly a picture-perfect moment that touched and crushed female fans all over, I honestly find it rather amusing that the aura of curiosity around his love life has reached its summit in glossies everywhere. Over the years, Butler has been romantically linked to beauties such as Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz to singing sensations like Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson. Although the lover-rumor mills are flattering to one´s image, Butler believes that the speculations do mark a stain in the long run. "I think that it does do your reputation harm if this is happening every week," said Butler. "It gets to the stage when you want to go: Don´t come near because then we´ll be having a thing! Stay over there and we maybe can shout to each other." Personal life at stake…I say it´s about time you ladies give the lad a break since he has sincerely stated that full-on relationships are not in his cards right now.

Sometimes I do wonder if Butler´s open-book persona is contributory to the fascination with his single livelihood. Someone once told me, "A still tongue keeps a wise head, but an honest soul talks all the more" and Butler comes in mind as someone who has no qualms about sharing with millions his childhood, his previous misendeavours and his single-ready-to-mingle status. But why crave the need for lady luck when he has mommy dearest by his side who has been his main support system in dire times. I guess it is then true to state that money and fame are completely valueless to the empowering love from family and fans. That is probably why Mr. Butler continues to feel humbled to stop when approached by a complete stranger or pose for a picture or two with a group of squeaky young teenagers who worship the ground he walks on. Bottom line: he delivers as a performer, a celebrated personality and as a person like most Scottish stars such as Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor and funnyman Craig Ferguson.

I write this column with no acquaintance with the actor but I have certainly gotten to know him through his loyal supporters, including my two ´crazy´ colleagues in the next compartment. Actually my so-called acknowledgement of the actor was only brought forth last year when one of them enlightened me that GB Gals was in need of a copy of The Straits Times article, which headlined ´Bad Boy Butler´. Concerned over her fractured elbow, I dug up the article, scanned it and mailed the written piece directly to the website as a form of good deed. Within a day, I got a heartfelt response from this lovely lady from GBG who displayed much gratitude over the small exertion.

But it wasn´t this scenario that fuelled my interest; it was the colossal poster of his latest flick, LAC that caught my attention just yesterday. "I know that face!" Upon scrutiny, did I then realize that this was the very same actor whose film I had penned my thesis back in university about two years ago. It was his short film entitled ´Please!´ in which he starred in 1999. My first words were, "Damn! He´s such a good actor," which explains the accolades he has been receiving so far. Now I would not be bowled over if I hear the Oscar buzz in time to come. Before I end, another Butler-addict in the office lends some advice. "Now that everybody knows you, never change Mr. Butler: it´s been long since a real man came along in Hollywood," says my Editor-in-chief...

CITAZIONE
Butler plays diverse, dangerous
Actor's versatility shines in career choices

By ALI JAAFAR

TARTAN SPARTAN: Gerard Butler started out as a lawyer before segueing into acting.

Gerard Butler has made a career out of confounding his critics. In recent years, the Scottish thesp, who recently turned 40, has played everything from an iconic, singing spectre ("The Phantom of the Opera") to a belligerent Spartan king ("300") to a London crook ("RocknRolla") to a bereaved widower seeking brutal vengeance on his family's killers ("Law Abiding Citizen").

Along the way, he's even managed to romance a lady or two.

That diversity in his choice of roles -- and ability to mix it across the action, thriller and romantic comedy genres -- has seen Butler emerge as leading man with more range than most.

"Anytime they think they have me pegged as one thing, then the challenge for me is to get out and surprise myself," Butler explains. "I feel I've only tapped into 10% of what I can do."

For Variety's Intl. Star of the Year, the dream to become an actor began, appropriately enough, with an actual dream at the age of 15.

Born in Glasgow, Butler spent much of his life in nearby Paisley before earning a degree and becoming a lawyer. Despite showing promise in the legal profession -- he was elected president of his school's law society -- the opportunity to pursue his passion for acting came when he auditioned for a stage production of Shakespeare's Roman tragedy "Coriolanus."

Now, more than two decades later, he is gearing up to star in a bigscreen adaptation of the play opposite Ralph Fiennes, who also makes his directorial debut with the project. Butler hopes that his current streak of box office success will enable him to continue to pursue more challenging and left-field roles.

"If I can keep making movies that perform at the box office, then it allows me to go and move into Shakespeare territory," Butler says. "I was talking to someone the other day and we were both surprised that I've actually been able to make it. I would always love to go off and make films like 'Dear Frankie' or 'Beowulf' even when there were larger projects around. In the long run that has paid off, but in the short term -- especially when those films didn't make any money -- it can make you a liability. But I wanted to do those films because I loved them."

This has been a good year for Butler. The romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth," in which he sparred with Katherine Heigl, and dark thriller "Law Abiding Citizen," co-starring Jamie Foxx, performed well in the U.S. and internationally. A clutch of buzzy projects in the pipeline -- including "The Bounty" opposite Jennifer Aniston and DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" -- underline his versatility.

Butler has also been ramping up activity at the Evil Twins shingle with his producing partner Alan Siegel, with the company nabbing a producer credit alongside the Film Dept. on "Citizen" and an expanding development slate, which includes "Teacher Man," about author Frank McCourt's 30-year career teaching in New York's public schools, and "Slide," about a former baseball player's attempts to fix his relationship with his child and estranged wife.

But don't expect Butler to give up acting in favor of donning a producer's cap.

"To be honest, 'Law Abiding Citizen' kicked the shit out of me, and it was a real breath of fresh air to work on 'The Bounty' and not have to worry about all that other stuff," Butler says.

He is also becoming less enamored of the grind of publicizing his projects.

"I've made two and a half movies and done press for three movies in the past four months, and it made me never want to do movies again because of the press situation," Butler concedes.

Ok prepariamoci ad un periodo di astinenza :( :( :(

Butler Serves up his Special Brand of Humour at DIFF
Adam Zacharias

16 December 2009
DUBAI — “I came all the way from LA…to sit up here and be blamed!” wept Gerard Butler, his jokey response to difficult questions over his acting capabilities and Hollywood’s demonisation of the Arab world.

The 300 actor charmed his way through a press conference at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) on Tuesday, where he was presented with Variety’s International Star of the Year award.

Faced with excitable hordes of female admirers, the Scotsman proved himself a consummate showman with his silly and self-deprecating humour.

The English to Arabic interpreter proved his comic foil throughout, with Butler speeding up his answers to see if she could keep up, and asking her to translate his mock-weeping and a bout of thick Scottish into Arabic.

“Trust me, if it were up to me I’d stick to the Scottish accent,” he said about regularly portraying American characters on screen. “That’s actually one of the few downsides of acting: I feel like I’ve lost a lot of my accent.”

When asked about widespread press speculation of a relationship with Priyanka Chopra, sparked on his recent trip to India, Butler responded: “It’s because they kept seeing us naked together!” before hastily adding that he was joking. “This is why I’m a media person’s nightmare. I’m going to get sent back for my tenth media training course,” he said. The actor, who this year starred in rom-com The Ugly Truth opposite Katherine Heigl and sci-fi flick Gamer, spoke of his admiration for the country.

“India is definitely one of my top two or three places on the planet,” he said. “I went to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, the backwaters of Kerala and the Himalayas on a motorbike. In Bombay, Priyanka threw a party for me and my friends, then two days later Shah Rukh Khan threw us a party. I’ve never felt so loved!”

Elsewhere during his whistlestop trip to Dubai, the 40-year-old spoke about getting fired a week before qualifying to become a lawyer in his 20s (“it left me open to the universe to have its wicked way with me”) and attracting the gossipmongers, who besides Chopra have also linked him to Jennifer Aniston on the sets of their new movie The Bounty Hunter.

“It goes with the territory,” sighed a resigned Butler. “It really bores me, and it’s a shame because I guess when you get to a certain level, people take that energy and use it in a toxic way.”

The A-lister admitted the only film he would get to see at this year’s DIFF would be James Cameron’s Avatar — screened at the Madinat Jumeirah last night — which he referenced when asked about people who claimed he couldn’t act.

“I didn’t know they said that!” he bantered. “Some people will think ‘Avatar’ is the best movie they’ve ever seen, other people will hate it. In ‘Reign of Fire’, one review would say ‘there were too many dragons in the movie’, then the next review would say ‘there weren’t enough dragons, we hated it’! You can’t win — I do my best and I think I do a good job.”

Butler revealed he is set to star in a Shakespeare film next year, which he will film in Serbia opposite Ralph Fiennes, although he refused to give further details.

“My career has moved ahead very quickly,” said Butler. “I can say I work all these different genres, but it’s still pretty much Hollywood-based. Offer me something! I’m always up for trying out something new.

“I have a multitude of criteria when considering taking a movie — the role, the story, the director, the cast and where you’re going to film. But for me, one of the main things is the underlying or prevailing messages. I feel a big responsibility.”

WHAT IS THIS THING THAT BUILD OUR DREAMS YET SLIPS AWAY FROM US?

"During the day, to go for a walk in some of the beautiful parts of Scotland,
where its shady, where rivers run under the trees,
which I just did and I saw the most unbelievably romantic spot and I thought, I could live here."
