Film Review 'One More Kiss' directed by Vadim Jean

Jackie Morrison
What would you do if the love of your life returned?
How selfish can one woman be? Sara abandons Sam, her childhood love, in order to seek her fortune in New York. When Sara is stricken with fatal brain cancer, her selfish motives prompt her to demand Sam’s affections years later despite his life commitment to Charlotte. Sara is a very difficult character to like. She is the epitome of narcissist and emotionally abusive. Sam’s love for Sara is sincere but hers is parasitic and evil.(perfettamente d'accordo)

This 1999 Scottish film featured a young Gerard Butler in one of his first romantic drama roles. A story about a pair of reunited childhood loves that reveals the frail loyalties that threaten a marriage. When Sara turns up at the door of her first love Sam’s restaurant she drops a bombshell on him and his wife. A devastated Sam has never recovered from losing Sara despite his marriage. Sarah only has a few weeks left and she asks Charlotte to allow her to spend her remaining days with Sam.

Sam can’t help himself and quickly abandons his marriage to fulfill Sara’s dying wishes. Sara’s return also coincides with her broken relationship with her father Frank. Sara uncovers a lost love of Frank’s life named Shirley who also left for America. She urges Frank to reunite with his own long lost love while Charlotte breaks down over Sam’s infidelity. Charlotte attempts to save her marriage by getting tickets to an Opera for Sam’s birthday but when he doesn’t show up, multiple tragedies are inevitable.

Sara never thinks that she is in the wrong. It never occurs to her that she has disrupted Sam’s life or has put her father through an unbearable burden. Sara wants what she wants and is nonchalant about her death. Even in her support group sessions we see a woman who is belligerent, assertive to a fault, and defiant against what is proper. She cares not about the impact of her actions on others. In fact, she relishes in making them upset like a true borderline personality. Sara has no remorse for the hurt and betrayal she causes to Charlotte. Violating boundaries is her specialty.

Gerard Butler is unrecognizable as a 28-year-old Chef with his thick Scottish accent that has not been heard much in his recent movies. His character carries much of the film.

One More Kiss is one of those secret gems that show a movie star in the making. It’s hard not to still like Butler as Sam despite his choice to betray his wife over a lost love who, in Charlotte’s words, didn’t want him when she was well.
