HOLLYWOOD faces the wrath of the Vikings - for giving the Norse warriors Scottish accents.
Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson voice Viking characters in DreamWorks Animation's new blockbuster How to Train Your Dragon.
And it has left movie fans and reviewers puzzled as to why the Vikings speak like Scots - and all their children have American accents.
One said: "It's nonsense - how would Scots feel if Hollywood gave William Wallace a Japanese accent?"
The movie is based on a book by Cressida Cowell, who was inspired by childhood holidays in the Hebrides.
It tells the story of a young Viking - voiced by an American actor - whose island is under constant attack from dragons.
Aussie radio presenter and film critic Michael Clarke said: "This is Hollywood, so naturally all the adult Vikings have Scottish experts relationship accents while the children Vikings have American accents."
Movie reviewer Simon Dillon said: "How to Train Your Dragon inexplicably assigns Scottish accents to many of its characters with no apparent explanation."
Miv Evans, in The Entertainment Magazine, said: "The story is set in Scotland so the Vikings have Scottish accents.
"Ok so far, but the kids all have American accents, which is just not possible."
One US blogger wrote: "It's likely that Braveheart is a major cause - audiences fell in love with heroes speaking in a Scottish brogue.
"The accent itself came to signify the characteristics of Wallace - brave, brutal, barbaric, but honourable.
"I think the connection was further entrenched by Shrek.
"Shrek was a noble ogre and Mike Myers chose to portray him with a Scottish accent.
"The makers of this movie felt it necessary to portray Vikings with a Scottish accent because they are barbaric, fight with swords and axes, and are honourable."
Some experts are ready to concede there is a relationship between Scots and the Norse people. But they are still disappointed that none of the Vikings sound like they hail from Scandinavia.
Kirsti Dinnis, 68, of the Edinburghbased Norwegian-Scottish society, said: "Some the Norwegian Vikings did settle on Orkney and Shetland and travelled the west coast.
"There was lots of intermingling and marriage but the film-makers could have had some Norwegian accents."
Viking expert Professor Steve Harding from Nottingham University, said: "The filmmakers are partially vindicated. Dingwall in Scotland is the best example.
"It's an old Viking capital and there is a 'Thingwall' or 'Tingwall' in the other parts of the UK. It's what the Vikings called their parliament.
"We think it's different in Scotland because of the Gaelic influence on the way they spoke.
"Basically Vikings who settled there picked up the local accent."
