Agli inizi di luglio 2004 i produttori canadesi Sturla Gunnarsson, Paul Stephens, Andrew Rai Berzins e Eric Jordan si recarono in Islanda per fare un film, una coproduzione tra Canada, Regno Unito ed Islanda. Fu l'inizio del progetto più difficile a cui ciascuno di loro avesse mai preso parte. Una serie di eventi continuava a mettere a rischio il progetto. A metà della produzione i finanziamenti non erano ancora arrivati, il film era seriamente al di sopra del budget previsto ed il finanziatore era abbastanza preoccupato da mandare un suo rappresentante in Islanda. La produzione fu posta sotto attento esame mentre il cast e la troupe lottavano contro il feroce vento islandese e la sempre minore luce del giorno. Le tempeste strappavano i tetti dalle costruzioni e spazzavano via le attrezzature e Gunnarson, man mano, sembrava prendere sempre più le caratteristiche e l'aspetto fisico di un troll mentre lottava per sconfiggere ostacoli insormontabili. La forte determinazione dei produttori (Sarah Polley l'ha definita 'un'ambizione del tutto insensata') fu l'unica cosa che sembrò in grado di guidare questa nave tormentata attraverso le tempeste e condurla in porto. Due giorni prima della fine delle riprese principali, il produttore Paul Stephens ammise che era un 'miracolo' che fossero vicini a completare le riprese senza aver esaurito i finanziamenti. Per molte altre persone della troupe fu un miracolo che nessuno fosse morto in una serie di incidenti o di altri eventi sfortunati che avevano perseguitato la produzione.
Jon Gustafsson, colui che ha girato il documentario, ha avuto una piccola parte nel film, impersonando uno dei compagni di Beowulf, uno che si trova sempre nelle retroguardie, quasi fuori scena e che non dice mai niente. Ciò significa che ha passato molti giorni sul set senza niente da fare, allora ha preso una piccola video camera ed ha cominciato a riprendere la storia di ciò che accadeva dietro le quinte.

Il documentario è interessante...il fatto che Gerry ne è il coproduttore può significare due cose:intanto che...ha investito dei soldi,il che conferma la sua oculatezza:investe solo in quello che gli piace...
Oppure può vuol dire che davvero sul set si lega di amicizia con i collaboratori...un'amicizia che non finisce alle sole riprese
Nell'un caso e nell'altro,c'è da pensare che questo nostro Gerry sia un uomo interessante e non solo una gran bel pezzo di sex symbol!

Il dvd uscirà il 30 di aprile e pare che sarà disponibile per tutte le regioni.
Il dvd conterrà un'ora di intervista esclusiva con Gerry e la famosa scena in cui Gerry si spoglia... si, come se noi lo comprassimo solo per quello (

Wrath of Gods is an intriguing exploration into the rigors of film making as seen through the troubled production of 2005's Beowulf and Grendel (not to be confused with Robert Zemeckis' upcoming motion capture adaptation of the same famed tale). The action is shown from the perspective of an extra in the film, a bystander whose on set video diary would showcase a seemingly doomed production. There were so many unforseen disasters on set (a car crash involving a member of the crew, dwindling finances, a leaky prop boat, etc.), that if it all didn't really happen, I never would have believed it.
Through it all, Beowulf and Grendel director Sturla Gunnarsson remains relatively affable as does his spirited cast headed by a playful Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, 300) and the gifted Stellan Skarsgard. (Good Will Hunting, Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest). Miraculously, Beowulf and Grendel did survive an intense production schedule and while the film didn't really go on to enjoy domestic box office success, that's hardly the point. Through all the unforseen crap, Gunnarsson and crew finished the job. The same couldn't be said for the brilliant Terry Gilliam who never was able to see his "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" adaptation come to life (that story is brilliantly displayed in the similarly themed documentary Lost in La Mancha – which Butler playfully references in this film).
Documentaries like Lost in La Mancha and the entertaining if a trifle sad Wrath of Gods make me wonder how any film ever gets completed. I have yet to see Beowulf and Grendel, but after watching Wrath of Gods, you can bet I'll check it out soon. Perhaps actress Sarah Polley sums it up best "The only thing honestly I can compare it to is "The Adventures of Baron Manchuasen" when I was 8 and that was I think 3 times harder than this. But nothing's have come close until this, in terms of just sheer, demented ambition." Wrath of Gods will be playing at the Red Rock Film Festival in Springdale, UT this November. Mercoledì 12 dicembre uscirà la versione europea del dvd, sarà commentato in Islandese e sottotitolato in inglese, vi riporto quello che è stato scritto su Gals in proposito...
It has some different bonus material however; in a typical European fashion it does not have a black box over Gerry in the scene where it was placed in the US version! As you know Europeans are much more relaxed about these things, and the black box was included in the US version as not to offend.
