Jesus Christ Superstar, venne alla luce nel 1970, frutto della genialità di Andrew Lloyd Webber e Tim Rice che mischiarono vecchie idee e brevi componimenti a nuove geniali trovate musicali. Secondo la visione di Webber, la trama è la “spina dorsale” del musical; i due autori vollero, infatti, cimentarsi nella più avvincente e conosciuta storia della vita di un uomo, quella di Gesù narrata nel Nuovo Testamento, una storia vecchia di duemila anni ma ancora così attuale. L’ultima settimana di vita di Gesù (quella presa in considerazione dal musical) sintetizza una vicenda che tocca tutti i grandi temi dell’uomo: la guerra, l’oppressione, il potere, l’amore, la morte, l’amicizia, la fede, il tradimento. Quella narrata da Webber e Rice è la storia di un uomo, Gesù, chiamato “figlio di Dio”, vista attraverso gli occhi di un altro uomo, Giuda, uno degli amici più cari e fidati di Gesù, un amico che lo ha tradito ma che al tempo stesso si è sentito tradito.
Il musical uscì dapprima con un singolo di Giuda e, successivamente, come LP con la voce del grande Ian Gillan dei Deep Purple nel ruolo di Gesù. Nelle prime 20 settimane il disco demolì tutti i record delle hit parade americane: più di 2.000.000 di copie vendute, la Jesusmania aveva preso il via.
Una versione per il palcoscenico era ormai indispensabile per soddisfare la grande richiesta del pubblico. Il tour partì nel luglio del ’71 con l’apparizione di una grande voce nera nel ruolo di Giuda, Carl Anderson. Il pubblico andò in delirio: la sera del debutto c’erano 13.000 persone. Mentre il musical attraversava l’America mietendo un mix spettacolare di enormi successi e pesantissime critiche (dagli ambienti più conservatori fu addirittura bollato come blasfemo), la meta di Broadway si faceva sempre più vicina. Sotto la guida dell’impresario Robert Stigwood e con i due onnipresenti Webber e Rice, la Rock Opera JCS sbarcò a Broadway riscuotendo un incredibile successo con un allestimento scenografico spettacolare e pomposo. All’enorme successo di botteghino fece eco un uguale successo nei negozi di dischi.
