IESB: I wonder if you are fan of graphic novels, because I’ve just in the last few years started reading them and I was really amazed at how cinematic some of these artists and authors are and they really seem to just distill the essence of cinema and the visual impact and also just kind of a gut feel to the emotions and the story that they depict.

Gerard: It’s a very good way of putting it. I wasn’t until this. Sin City was the first time I really became aware of how dark you could be and then you think of course you can, because it’s just in the mind of your imagination and putting a pen to paper. You know, it doesn’t have to be kiddie stuff and it certainly isn’t. And your right, 300, because we’re talking about it, is that perfect example of seeing a world created with just little snapshots, that yet say so much just by a physical stance or an impression or an exaggeration and the colors and the tone, that was my main source of information and inspiration for playing the role.

IESB: I wonder in terms of performance as an actor is it almost like taking a separate approach, or not a separate, but a different approach to, you know now it is so much method acting and brooding over what these characters are doing as your saying, there seems to be let’s cut to the chase of what this guy wants to get at and just go for that you know?

Gerard: Well, I mean, any way of performing is a method. It’s one’s method. I’ve never quite understood what method acting really is because you find out people were method actors and you realize that we’re all doing different methods, so we all have our own way and but your right about this one in so much as just like the Spartans just kind of cut the chase of what’s going on you kind of got to cut to the heart of this character as well. And a lot of that came through the physical training and the fight work. When you are training with that intensity on such a daily basis for months and months and months you become that character. Basically, if you turn your mind that way for me the training was a constant focus and meditation on being a Spartan, being a king and being a leader. So yeah, I felt like a lion up there and that was just there.

IESB: Politically it is also a really interesting movie in that you have this king who you immediately want to root for and I was telling Zack now we have the hindsight to see what was the right actions that he did, but I think at the time I would have almost been on the side of the senate, you know what I mean? And it really shows how what a difficult situation he was in and just the whole country was in, or the whole city/state was in.

Gerard: You’re right and I love that. I mean I love that you have a different opinion than somebody else I just spoke to and I have a different opinion than both of you, but if that’s is what a film does, leaves you with different opinions, then that’s great and you can kind of argue it out of think about it because I thought the same thing, yet I always have compassion for the characters that I play, but, yet there were times when in discussion I think, we are like the bad guys in a way and yet you’re still set within the framework that we are defending our homeland and, we didn’t ask anybody to come in with this massive force and say “bow down”. We said no, we don’t do that. Would you if somebody came into your house and said “bow down in front of me”? Some people would, some people wouldn’t, but that wasn’t the Spartan way and therefore 300 years of becoming that Spartan state would have been a waste if they had just said “yeah.” It wasn’t, it wasn’t, they weren’t capable of thinking like that. Yeah, tough choice, but they had to do it, and in the end that’s why the film is so gripping because you are like “god damn, I wish I was like that, I wish I had that strength of character”

O'REGAN: Gerard Butler's new film, "300", is an artistic and action-packed look at the Battle of Thermopylae. It is one of history's most enduring tales of heroism that saw 300 Spartans fight hundreds of thousands of Persian invaders. Yesterday, I got a chance to sit down and chat with Gerard Butler.

[Taped segment begins]

O'REGAN: That's quite a movie you made.

BUTLER: I think so. I think so. I've never been involved in anything like this. And, you know, often you think there's a buzz about your own film because the people that speak to you are normally the producers. But this has gone way to another level, to the extent that you really feel the buzz all around.

O'REGAN: You've seen the final product?

BUTLER: Oh yeah.

O'REGAN: Which must be really strange for you, because when you were filming it it must have been green screens all over the place and talking to things that aren't really there.

BUTLER: Yeah.

O'REGAN: And then you see the final --. There are very few times nowadays when you see something and it is completely and utterly different from anything else that you've ever seen.

BUTLER: Yeah. The way you talk about it is the experience I had as well. I had a chance to spend time in the art department. There's a lot of artistic renderings that were already pretty much how it was going to look. But they were just stills. So, you had to go with that -- and a lot of use of the graphic novel because they're so similar. But after that --

O'REGAN: Every shot is like a poster. You know? Everything is like a painting. Every single frame.

BUTLER: I think the hardest thing that they probably had to do for this film was cut the trailer, because I think often when you watch trailers and it turns out that's the only good shots they have in the film. Every shot in this movie is a trailer shot. And that's great to be involved with.

I mean, it's delicious to look at, just to behold. If there was no story there I would still want to go and see it because it's just amazing. If it was just for the action I still want to go and see it.

But on top of that, it has an incredibly powerful story which, as itself, is a true story, just a mind-blowing feat of, you know, what 300 men did against millions.

O'REGAN: The Spartans were in such -- exactly, they were a warrior culture that the world, from what we know, has never seen a warrior like the Spartan warrior. You didn't have like a sixpack. You had like a 12-pack. Tell me that was CG. The shape you guys were in was incredible.

BUTLER: I knew for this film that I wanted to go to a place I'd never been before. I felt personally I had to go to a place I'd never been before. It was always on my mind.

I'm standing off against a million men. I'm leading 300 of the most bad-ass guys you'll ever see on camera. I have to be them and more.

And the thing is, the more I got into it the more I realized the value of that, that it just became my thing. That became my Spartan code, you know.

These guys, you've never seen the likes of them. Not even today. They trained in a different way because [unintelligible] ... you know, blood, sweat --"Oh, sorry, mate, I just stabbed you in the kidney. Anyway, let's carry on." That's what these guys did all the time. I mean, talk about toughness. It's unimaginable how tough they were.

O'REGAN: What would you say your favourite scene of the film was? I think I'm going to guess.

BUTLER: Yes, selfishly, I love -- just from a pure entertainment, adrenaline point of view -- my "freelance". You know, after the end of the first battle when I just cut through everybody. It's just insane.

O'REGAN: [laughs] It's insane, I agree.

BUTLER: And what's funny is that we did that the first day. And it was so big and epic. It was incredible. It was the first time everybody had really worked together. The whole crew. Now, crews normally get bored -- "Yeah, whatever." I mean, they were up. Roaring. Applauding.

O'REGAN: These guys [studio crew] are pretty good. They're into you.

BUTLER: Is that right?

O'REGAN: Yeah.

BUTLER: I'm hoping for applause after this interview. [laughter]

But it was for the whole thing because it was like 60 stunt guys. I mean, the testosterone, I mean, you could taste it, you could feel it.

And the next day we found out there had been a problem with the camera and we had to do the whole deal again.

O'REGAN: No!

BUTLER: And we had to wait until after Christmas. And I knew, I'm going home to Scotland, you know, Christmas pudding, trifle, apple crumble and ice cream, and for days after when you eat all the, you know, the chocolates. So, I had to cut all that. That killed me.

O'REGAN: A violent film. It's a beautiful film. And there's one pivotal scene where a young girl dies in Gerard's arms. And that is little Alex Beaton. And she's a Canadian actress. There she is with Gerard. She dies in her arms. And she is the daughter of CTV Newsnet's Kate Wheeler.

So, congratulations, Alex. I understand he gave you some great advice on set. We wish you nothing but the best.

Io non capisco su che base si possa definirlo stupido (come ha fatto il NY times) è tratto dal fumetto (che racconta comunque un fatto storicamente avvenuto) e quindi va visto come tale, ovviamente chi non è in sintonia con questo genere di film eviti di andarlo a vedere che fa prima

Inoltre per quanto riguarda le polemiche dell'iran, è ovvio che sono fatte solo per parlare contro l'america, i persiani non erano dei santi, hanno tentato più volte di conquistare la grecia e non penso che andassero in battaglia con i mazzi di fiori al posto delle armi

Comunque la cosa importante è che tutte queste polemiche fanno pubblicità al film!
