Parigi, 1870. Il Teatro dell’Opera è nel pieno splendore, tra le ballerine di fila c’è la giovanissima Christine Daae, cresciuta nel teatro sotto le cure della direttrice del ballo, Madame Giry, l’unica che conosce e capisce il suo segreto. La bellissima ragazza, infatti, sente ogni notte una voce misteriosa che la chiama dai recessi più bui del teatro e che le insegna l’arte del canto: il suo “angelo della musica”. La voce è in realtà quella del “Fantasma dell’Opera”, un personaggio misterioso dal volto sfigurato, musicista geniale e folle, che abita nei sotterranei del teatro terrorizzando la compagnia e gli impresari. Quando la capricciosa primadonna Carlotta abbandona la scena, Madame Giry suggerisce di sostituirla con Christine che fa così il suo debutto sulla scena. Splendida nell’abito bianco di scena, la ragazza canta divinamente, facendo innamorare il pubblico, il Fantasma e anche il conte Raoul de Chagny, mecenate del teatro, giovane, bello e ricco. L’amore del Fantasma, che vuole trasformare la ragazza in una stella dell’Opera, trascinandola però con sé nel suo mondo di tenebra, diventa ossessione e Christine, per quanto fortemente attratta e affascinata dal suo maestro, da quello che comunque per lei è l’”angelo della musica”, si trova divisa tra l’amore romantico di Raoul e l’oscura passione del Fantasma; tra una vita tormentata e un futuro sereno - “Let me be your freeedom […] I’m here with you beside you to guard you and to guide you […] Say you’ll share with me one love one life time” sono le parole del conte che la fanno innamorare.

Tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di Gaston Leroux del 1911, il musical di Andrew Lloyd Webber è stato messo in scena per la prima volta all’Her Majesty Theatre di Londra nel 1986; da allora ha attratto in tutto il mondo un pubblico da record per uno spettacolo teatrale.

"Il Fantasma dell'Opera" è record a Broadway

NEW YORK (Reuters) - "Il Fantasma dell'opera" ha colpito ancora.

Il melodramma romantico di Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber ha ottenuto il 9 gennaio scorso il titolo di spettacolo maggiormente rappresentato nella storia di Broadway .

Il "Fantasma" ha superato un altro spettacolo di Webber, "Cats", quando ha iniziato il suo regno come campione di Broadway con uno spettacolo speciale al Majestic Theatre, dove è restato per circa 18 anni da quando ha debuttato il 26 gennaio 1988.

"E' travolgente", ha detto Webber a Reuters.

"Devo confessare che quando ho realizzato come stava andando 'Cats' ho detto a tutti i miei amici 'capite che una cosa del genere potrebbe non risuccedere", e poi, naturalmente, con il 'Fantasma' è successo".

Focalizzandosi più sulla storia d'amore che sull'horror della novella del 19esimo secolo di Gaston Leroux, Webber e i suoi collaboratori hanno realizzato uno spettacolo pieno di effetti speciali per creare la vita dell'Opera di Parigi e il suo mondo, abitato da un compositore sfigurato che si innamora di una giovane soprano. Anche i numeri generati dallo show sono sorprendenti.

Sono state usate oltre 1.300 tonnellate di ghiaccio secco e circa 5,7 milioni di litri di polvere per creare gli effetti degli spari. Il fantasma ha fatto circa 15.000 viaggi sulla sua barca attraverso la nebbia e sono stati usati 7.486 set di schiuma di lattice usate per il suo volto deformato.

SETTE TONY AWARDS

La produzione di Broadway, che ha vinto nel 1988 sette Tony Awards compreso quello di miglior musical, è stato visto da quasi 11 milioni di persone e ha incassato circa 600 milioni di dollari, un altro record sulla Great White Way.

Il musical, che ha debuttato a Londra nel 1986, è stato un fenomeno internazionale. E' stato visto da oltre 80 milioni di persone in tutto il mondo.

"Non mostra alcun segno di debolezza", ha detto Webber. "E' straordinario".

Ci sono attualmente sette produzioni in tutto il mondo: a Londra, New York; Budapest, in Ungheria, Tokyo; San Paolo in Brasile; Essen in Germania; ed c'è un tour nazionale negli Usa. .

Trama, 1°atto

La scena si apre nei saloni dell'Opera di Parigi, parecchi anni dopo lo svolgersi degli avvenimenti che saranno narrati in seguito (in pratica la storia comincia dalla fine); nell'immenso teatro si sta svolgendo un'asta degli oggetti più pregiati che appartenevano all'Opera: la scena si focalizza su un anziano personaggio, il visconte Raoul de Chagny, che acquista un vecchio carillon a cui sembra essere sentimentalmente legato.

Ecco che vengono messi in vendita anche i resti del mastodontico lampadario di cristallo oramai frantumato, ma , come per incanto, la scena muta, il lampadario ora pende maestoso dal soffitto del teatro, e noi siamo catapultati indietro nel tempo.
Lefèvre, anziano direttore del teatro, ha deciso di ritirarsi dall'incarico e sta presentando alla compagnia di cantanti, ballerini, e macchinisti, i nuovi direttori, tali André e Firmin. All'Opera è in allestimento un nuovo spettacolo, "Annibale", la prima donna del momento è Carlotta. Durante le prove del suddetto spettacolo accade un inquietante imprevisto, una quinta si stacca dalle funi e cade addosso a Carlotta quasi uccidendola. La cantante, furiosa, abbandona il teatro, intanto si sparge la voce che l'incidente sia opera del "fantasma". Meg Giry, una delle ballerine, propone ai nuovi direttori di sostituire Carlotta con una sua compagna ballerina, Christine Daaé, la quale è stata istruita all'arte del canto, benché non voglia rivelare chi sia stato il suo maestro. Mme Giry, madre di Meg e insegnante di danza, consegna ai nuovi direttori una lettera firmata dal Fantasma contenente due richieste: un salario mensile e un palco riservato, il n°5. I direttori vogliono accertarsi dell'abilità canora di Christine e le fanno un'audizione, alla quale assiste anche Raoul, giovane padrone dell'Opera, che rimane estasiato dall'esibizione della ragazza. Christine non rivela a nessuno l'identità del suo maestro, soltanto a Meg confessa che si tratta dell "Angelo della Musica".

Quella sera, dopo lo spettacolo, Raoul si reca dietro le quinte per complimentarsi con la cantante, e i due scoprono di essere stati compagni d'infanzia, sboccia l'amore. Appena Christine è sola nel camerino, la voce fatata dell'Angelo della Musica la trascina verso lo specchio, che la risucchia. L'Angelo non è altri che il Fantasma, che guida Christine negli oscuri sotterranei dell'Opera, fino ad un lago sotterraneo dove ha costruito la sua dimora. Il Fantasma è un musicista, da anni sta componendo un'opera tutta sua , "Il Don Giovanni trionfante", Christine è stata, ed è, la sua musa ispiratrice, colei che interpreterà la sua musica. Dopo una notte stregata tra le braccia del Fantasma Christine si risveglia, il fantasma dorme, così ella gli toglie la maschera e rimane shockata dalla sua atroce bruttezza, quasi mostruosità. Il Fantasma è incollerito perché lei non avrebbe mai dovuto toccare la maschera, ma, conscio della sua deformità e affezionato alla ragazza, le concede la libertà.
Durante l'assenza di Christine il fantasma aveva recapitato moltissime lettere:in una chiedeva ai nuovi direttori di sostituire Carlotta nella prossima rappresentazione de "Il Muto" e di mettere al suo posto Christine, se non avessero esaudito le sue richieste sarebbe accaduto un terribile disastro. Per timore di indisporre Carlotta i direttori disobbediscono al Fantasma, ed è Carlotta a pagarne le conseguenze: nel bel mezzo dello spettacolo la sua voce si trasforma in un acido gracchiare da ranocchia che le impedisce di proseguire. Christine la sostituisce, ma anche la sua esibizione viene interrotta da una macabra visione:il cadavere di Joseph Bouquet, il macchinista, che penzola dall'alto di una quinta, con un cappio intorno al collo. Nella sala c'è scompiglio, Christine e Raoul si rifugiano sul tetto del teatro e pianificano una fuga per il giorno seguente, ma il Fantasma li ha uditi. La sua vendetta non tarda:mentre il pubblico applaude il cast, l'immenso lampadario di cristallo precipita dal soffitto sulla platea.

2° atto

All'Opera si dà un gran ballo in maschera per festeggiare l'anno nuovo, il Fantasma pare ormai scomparso da tempo; proprio durante la festa Christine e Raoul decidono di fidanzarsi in segreto. Ma anche il Fantasma approfitta della confusione per tornare allo scoperto: travestito da Morte Rossa sfila tra la folla e consegna ad André lo spartito del suo "Don Giovanni Trionfante", comandandogli di rappresentarlo. Raoul intanto ha scoperto che il fantasma non è un vero fantasma, ma un uomo deforme, dotato di grande intelligenza, che ha fatto dell'Opera il suo nascondiglio, e la sua "reggia".

Raoul escogita un piano per incastrare il fantasma: durante la rappresentazione del "Don Giovanni Trionfante" il Fantasma assisterà dal solito palco, e lì Raoul lo acchiapperà bloccandogli ogni via d'uscita. Christine accetta a malincuore di essere complice nel piano per intrappolare il Fantasma, non riesce a dimenticare che lui era per lei l'Angelo della Musica. L'opera è in scena, ma il Fantasma strangola Piangi e prende il suo posto nei panni di Don Giovanni: Christine lo riconosce e lo smaschera davanti alla polizia, ma il mostro, velocissimo, scompare rapendo la ragazza. Christine rimprovera il Fantasma, ora può vederne tutto l'orrore, che non è nel suo volto deforme, ma nel suo animo malvagio. Raoul li raggiunge, guidato nei sotterranei da Mme Giry, e viene fatto prigioniero. Christine deve affrontare una dolorosa scelta: vivere per sempre col mostro o vedere la morte di Raoul. Intanto una folla inferocita avanza nei sotterranei, decisa ad uccidere il Fantasma: questi sente il rumore avvicinarsi, vacilla, ordina ai due ragazzi di fuggire insieme, e scompare, abbandonando sul suo trono la maschera bianca

com'è colorato... :occhilucidi: non mi piace la faccia di Christine( jiu perfida) preferisco Sandra Joseph e Rachael Barrell! :P Tim martin invece è caruccio( prima faceva sempre raoul ma a broadway e poi nelle tournee americane...) invece di anthony - di cui non mi ricordo in quale produzione l'avevo sentito nominare, non so molto.. :unsure:

E in down once more, Earl, mi ha anche sorriso! Cioè non era propio un sorriso...Era più che altro una risata che non finiva più indicando la sottosritta, ero seduta in seconda fila, che rideva anche lei sentendosi gli di tutti gli occhi degli spettatori adosso! :boom: :swoon: :lampadario:
