Jennifer Aniston, best known as Rachel Green on the hit sitcom Friends, will executive produce the period musical entitled Goree Girls. Based on a true story, Goree Girls is a film about eight women who were incarcerated at Texas’ Goree State Farm penitentiary in the 1940s who formed one of the first all-female western acts in history.
Aniston, a 38-year old native of Sherman Oaks, California, is an Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning film and television actress. Apart from Friends, she is also known for her roles in films, including Bruce Almighty, Along Came Polly, The Break-Up, Rumor Has It, and Derailed.
The idea to make the film sparked from a 2003 Texas Monthy feature entitled "O Sister, Where Art Thou?" The said film centered on the history of the Goree All Girl String Band, a group made up of convicts serving time for theft, murder, and cattle rustling. Despite their lack of music experience, they were able to become a popular group for brief period, drawing a weekly audience of 7 million listeners to their live radio show. Consequently, the group was flooded with flowers, fan mails and marriage proposals from male admirers. Later, the group’s members were pardoned and the Goree Girls eventually faded.
The former Friends star and producing partner Kristin Hahn are developing the project through DreamWorks, with writer Margaret Nagle.
"We are so happy that Jennifer Aniston has brought this project to DreamWorks Studios as a producer," DreamWorks’ Stacey Snider said. "She has an intuitive sense of what can turn a strong concept into a film, and we look forward to working with her as we bring 'Goree Girls' to the screen."
Meanwhile, Goree Girls isn’t the only upcoming film Aniston will be focusing on. She has other projects lined up for the next two years, including the crime-thriller Wanted, and the drama The Senator’s Wife.
